Is January the right time to embark on your yoga journey?

January is often a difficult month as we transition from the festivities of Christmas and New Year. Many of us go back to work after a break. It’s still Winter, cold and dark and the days are short. The natural world is asleep until Springtime which feels like a long time away. Yet we are pressured by social media and the diet and fitness industries to hit the ground running after a month of indulgence and shake up our exercise routine.

If you’re feeling inspired to improve your health that’s amazing! But if you’re feeling pressured to do it at this time of year, when you feel tired and wishing you could hibernate, it’s ok to wait a while and simply rest like nature.

If you’re struggling with your mood or want to find a gentle way to rebalance your body without the pressure, Yoga might be an option for you at this time of year.

Yoga can really help to boost our endorphins, those feel-good chemicals that make us feel happy! Yoga also breaks down stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline, which can affect us in the darker months more than usual. Yoga teaches us the importance and value of REST and in Winter our bodies crave this rest so we can feel replenished in Spring.

You can practise yoga in a class full of like-minded people and feel part of a community with shared interest in wellbeing. Yoga also teaches us skills that we can practise in our daily lives, such as mindfulness, breath control and stress release. Yoga is so much more than a fitness class - it’s a philosophy of how to live a good and positive life.

What a wonderful way to start the year by learning how to really care for your body, mind and soul?
